Demon Slayer The Movie Scores Biggest-Ever Foreign Language Opening At US Box Office-October 2024
Oct 19, 2024 8:47 PM

Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train has had the biggest foreign language opening weekend in US box office history. The anime movie made $21.1 million in its first three days on release.

According to Box Office Mojo, the film opened on 1'600 screens in the US and Canada. It had a $12,213 screen average, which is the highest per-screen average in the US since Sonic the Hedgehog opened in February 2020.

Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train was already a massive success internationally. Since its Japanese release in October last year, it has become the most successful movie ever released there, overtaking Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away, which held the record for 19 years. It is also the 16th biggest foreign language film ever released worldwide.

The movie follows Season 1 of the anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, which is adapted from Koyoharu Gotouge's hugely popular manga series. The manga and anime are set in Taishō-era Japan and focus on the war between humans and demons.

Ahead of the movie's release, Funimation released three Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba specials, which recapped the events of Season 1. Season 2 is expected later this year.
