DC's Wonder Woman Movie Will Have "Lightness and Humor," Filmmakers Say-September 2024

While both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad were box office hits, they attracted criticism for their dark, serious tones. Wonder Woman is the next film in the DC cinematic universe, and the filmmakers have been speaking about the different approach they have taken to it.

In an interview with Variety, producer Deborah Snyder explained that DC's films wouldn't all be the same. "Wonder Woman is very different in tone and style than Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad," she said. "We pick directors who have their own points of view, so that each of our films will have their own personality."

DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson also stressed that fans shouldn't expect a moody, serious Wonder Woman. "There's a misconception that DC or Warner has made a conscious decision for all our movies to be darker or edgier," she said. "That's not the case. Fans of the DC universe know that there are characters, like Batman, who are darker, but there are others like Wonder Woman, who are hopeful, optimistic leaders, and the tone of this film represents that.

"Patty [Jenkins, director] brought a beauty and a sense of lightness or humor, and a little romance to it. It's a very aspirational movie."

Nelson also explained that while the film would have plenty of action, it wouldn't necessarily be the main focus. "Her armor, the shield, the lasso, and so forth are what you could describe as defensive weapons as opposed to offensive weapons," she said. "That's a pretty good way to think about the way she fights. She's not choosing to fight for the thrill of battle. She's fighting because she believes in something and she's quick to put down that sword when the opportunity is there."

In other Wonder Woman news, it was reported this week that the character has been selected as Honorary UN Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls. The UN is honoring Wonder Woman to promote gender equality, as well as celebrating her 75th anniversary.

Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot as the Amazonian princess-turned-superhero, alongside Chris Pine, Robin Wright, and Danny Huston. It arrives in cinemas on June 2, 2017.
