Darkstalkers Resurrection hasn't managed to sell enough copies to be successful, Capcom has said.
The game, an HD compilation of Darkstalkers 3 and Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge, was released in March 2013 on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. Capcom senior vice president Christian Svensson took to the Capcom Unity forums to acknowledge that while the game had appeared in digital bestseller lists, it did not sell enough copies to be considered successful by the publisher.
When it was pointed out that the game appeared in the top 10 lists for the US PlayStation Store in March, Svensson replied that "sadly, it's not as high on that list as it really needs to be to be successful."
Capcom hopes to keep promoting the game over the coming months, however. "We're working on promotions and the like to improve the situation," said Svensson, admitting that Capcom might have misjudged the interest in the Darkstalkers license.
"We've not given up. But I'm disappointed in the opening sales response relative to any other fighting title we've put out on the same platforms given the frequency and urgency of requests we've had here over the last several years and the quality of the execution. It is the most fully featured and probably best project of this type we've done."
"And before people jump to the wrong conclusions, I'm not blaming fans who did buy it and supported the brand. I'm very thankful for those guys (thank you, to all of you). I'm more disappointed by my misread of the information in this particular case."
Darkstalkers Resurrection received a respectable score of 8.0 in its GameSpot review last month. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.
