Bandai Namco and From Software shared two new Dark Souls III videos ahead of tomorrow's PlayStation Experience event.
The first one is a brand new trailer titled 'Darkness Has Spread', which shows a mix of different environments and monsters from Dark Souls III.
The gameplay footage, on the other hand, shows a huge tree boss among other scenes.
Shortly after announcing the game, From Software said that Dark Souls III would be the last entry in the franchise for a while. However, series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki has since contradicted that statement and added that it would be a turning point for the series instead.
A major new features is the introduction of the 'weapon arts' combat mechanics. What this means is that each weapon will feature different types of attacks, in an effort to diversify combat from earlier games.
For instance, the straight sword will allow our player character to enter a ready stance and quickly close the gap with the opponent or unleash a devastating, guard-breaking blow. Greatswords, on the other hand, allow for lunge attacks and powerful attacks that cause significant damage or launch opponents in the air. Dual wielding also has its place, since it can dispatch multiple enemies with an Area of Effect (AoE) spinning attack.
The same combat mechanics has been applied to ranged weapons. With a short bow, you'll be able to fire off arrows quickly while strafing and/or dodging. Miyazaki revealed to have been inspired by two popular characters when designing the weapon arts: Guts from Berserk and Legolas from The Lord of the Rings.
As a whole, combat and movement were both made faster in Dark Souls III; that includes backstepping and swinging heavy weapons. Dark Souls III will be released for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on April 12, 2016 in both North America and Europe; the pre-order editions were leaked a few days ago.
