Activision officially announced the production of Dark Reign 2. Calling the game "a fully immersive 3D real-time strategy game," Activision will release the Windows 95/98/NT title sometime during the summer of 1999.
The title is being developed by newcomer Pandemic Studios, which was founded by a number of the original members of the Activision Dark Reign team. DR2 will be a prequel to the original Dark Reign. Gamers find themselves on Earth in the 26th century following a group of futuristic Tribes in the midst of an uprising against the iron-fist ruling elite.
"With Dark Reign 2, we are taking a huge leap forward in redefining real-time strategy games," states Josh Resnick, president, Pandemic Studios. "Working with true 3D battlefields, we've proven that 3D can add much more to an RTS game than just great graphics. 3D gives gamers the power to control their viewpoint into the world, plugging them into the frenzy of combat, while maintaining command of the massive battles that all of us real-time strategy fans crave. Imagine being able to look at a battlefield on the macro level, zoom into an over-the-shoulder view of your favorite unit as it blasts an enemy tank, and then zoom back out again to see if your opponent is sending in reinforcements."
