Today, CD Projekt RED shared several Cyberpunk 2077 news during its Investor Day. First and foremost, the base game has sold 25 million units to date, while the recent Phantom Liberty expansion sold three million copies just in the launch week.
Of these three million units, 35.9% were sold in North America, 35.1% in Europe, 23.1% in Asia, 2.8% in Australia, 2.7% in South America, and 0.4% in Africa. The platform split shows that 68% of the sales took place on PC (10% on CD Projekt RED's GOG platform), 20% on Sony's PlayStation 5, and 13% on Microsoft's Xbox Series S|X.
360 CDPR employees worked on Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, but the number grows tenfold when considering everyone engaged in the project from outside the company. The expansion's development cost $62.84 million, with another $21.71 million spent on marketing. Those three million sales alone, multiplied by $29.99, have generated $90 million in revenue - though obviously, CDPR only got 70% of any sales made on Steam, PlayStation Store, and Xbox Store.
CD Projekt RED also announced a big partnership with Anonymous Content to develop a live-action project in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. Anonymous Content is a global entertainment company with several hits under its belt, including movies like The Revenant and Spotlight (both Academy Award winners), Collateral Beauty, Outlaw King, The Midnight Sky, Stillwater, and Swan Song. Their TV show roster is perhaps even more prestigious, including series like True Detective and Mr. Robot (both Emmy winners), The Knick, Berlin Station, The OA, 13 Reasons Why, Counterpart, The Alienist, Home Before Dark, Paradise Lost, Defending Jacob, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, and Shantaram. They are also working on Taika Waititi's Time Bandits and on the live-action adaptation of Life Is Strange.
The Cyberpunk 2077 live action project is still at an early stage. The production company is currently seeking a screenwriter. Garrett Kemble, David Levine, Ryan Schwartz, and Bard Dorros will produce on behalf of Anonymous Content alongside Charlie Scully, though CDPR's creative team behind the game will collaborate closely. They previously had success when working with Studio Trigger on the critically acclaimed Netflix animated series Edgerunners.
Last but not least, CD Projekt RED announced its games have sold over 100 million units when combining The Witcher trilogy and Cyberpunk 2077. You can read Wccftech's review of the Phantom Liberty expansion here.
