In support of Black Lives Matter following the unjust death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, film distribution company Criterion is making a vast selection of its classic African American cinema free for all users--whether you are a subscriber to The Criterion Channel or not.
This includes an assortment of titles from filmmakers such as Cheryl Dunye, Julie Dash, Kathleen Collins, Leilah Weinraub, Oscar Micheaux, William Greaves, and many more. The most notable name on the list, however, is the late poet Maya Angelou, who directed the 1998 drama Down in the Delta.

You can access these films on the company's official website or via its Criterion Collection app, which is available on everything from Apple TV and Roku to Android and iOS devices.
In addition to streaming some African American films for free regardless of subscription, Criterion is making a $25,000 "initial contribution" and a sustained $5,000 "monthly commitment" to firms fighting systemic racism in America. This includes "bail funds, community organizations, legal defense funds, and advocacy groups that address police reform." Criterion did not specify which institutions will receive these donations but said they will be named on the company's official social channels like Instagram and Twitter.

This is just one of the many outpourings of support for the Black community from giant corporations. Contributions from the games industry to BLM include Devolver Digital, Electronic Arts, Humble Bundle, Square Enix, and many more. We are also raising money for both COVID-19 relief efforts and Black Lives Matter with our Play For All summer gaming event, which kicked off earlier this month.
