Could Scrubs Come Back? Creator Bill Lawrence Weighs In-October 2024
Oct 19, 2024 6:28 AM

In this new era where so many once-popular TV shows are getting rebooted, could the wacky and wonderful hospital drama Scrubs be next? The cast of the beloved show came together at the Vulture Festival this weekend, and of course, people asked about a possible reboot.

According to Deadline, creator Bill Lawrence said he would love to work with the actors, writers, and crew again, but only under specific conditions. "It was the best time in my life…you can never equal that experience. But that said, sometimes reboots, not all the time, but sometimes, they feel like a money grab," he said.

If the cast, writers, or crew came to Lawrence "destitute and unemployed" and wanted to reboot Scrubs, Lawrence said it would happen. But this is an unlikely scenario given that the show's stars are all doing pretty well already.

Lawrence added that what might be more likely is to make a one-off "little movie or something like that." As for the plot, Lawrence said he'd like to the reunion to show where all the characters are in their lives. Ken Jenkins, who played Bob Kelso, said the Janitor (Neil Flynn) would be back in the CIA, while Judy Reyes, who played Carla, said she would like to see her character with a couple kids in her relationship with Turk (Donald Faison).

Scrubs also starred Zach Braff as JD, John C. McGinley as Dr. Cox, Sarah Chalke as Elliot, and Robert Maschio as The Todd. The show moved networks, from NBC to ABC, for its final two seasons. The show changed directions at the end, and added new cast members like Dave Franco, Michael Mosley, Kerry Bishe, and Eliza Coupe.

With its move from NBC to ABC (which is owned by family friendly media giant Disney), Scrubs was apparently forbidden from showing The Todd in his trademark banana hammock outfit. Lawrence mentioned during the panel that they had to frame the cameras above The Todd's penis to comply with the new rules. Not only that, but ABC apparently said no to an episode involving medical marijuana, which struck Lawrence as odd given that an earlier episode involved Carla and Elliot finding a prostitute for a virgin patient who wanted to have sex before they died.

"This is how screwed up network television is," Lawrence said, as reported by Vulture. "We had this story about getting medicinal marijuana for somebody who was having trouble with chemo and cancer. So to make a point, I said, 'What if the patient was a virgin and decided they want to have sex for the first time and Carla and Elliot wanted to go looking for a male prostitute for him?' They said, 'Oh, that's fine.' We could get a prostitute, just not medicinal marijuana."

Scrubs ran for nine seasons from 2001 to 2010.
