The first trailer for the live-action Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers has arrived, and it's one of the funniest we've seen in quite some time. But don't call it a reboot because this is a comeback. It's also marks the brief return for an animated cat from a Paula Abdul music video.
Taking place in a world where Chip 'n Dale was also a cartoon--but the animated actors were real and live in reality--the live-action movie takes place 30 years after the end of the original cartoon, where Chip (John Mulaney) and Dale (Andy Samberg) are reunited. And for a split-second, at the 20-second mark, you can see MC Skat Kat, who made his debut in Paula Abdul's music video "Opposites Attract." Check out the trailer below.
"Chip and Dale are living amongst cartoons and humans in modern-day Los Angeles, but their lives are quite different now," reads the official description. "It has been decades since their successful television series was canceled, and Chip has succumbed to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman. Dale, meanwhile, has had CGI surgery and works the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former cast mate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must repair their broken friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas once again to save their friend's life."
The film will premiere exclusively on Disney+, and it also stars Will Arnett, Eric Bana, Flula Borg, Keegan-Michael Key, Tim Robinson, Seth Rogan, and more comedy heavyweights. The Lonely Island's Akiva Schaffer is directing a script by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand.
This isn't the first time Disney has mixed live-action and animation--it's been a part of the company for decades. The most notable of these films is 1988's Who Framed Roger Rabbit by Robert Zemeckis, which featured a private detective (Bob Hoskins) trying to prove the innocence of an animated rabbit for murder. And yes, Roger Rabbit is also in the Chip 'n Dale trailer above.
