The pair's take on Marvel's MODOK--that's "Mobile Organism Designed Only for Killing"--is a stop-motion series eschewing the supervillain's treacherous day job in favor of spotlighting his attempts to balance his home life with his evil organization, AIM. According to Entertainment Weekly, "When the show begins, we learn that MODOK has been a very neglectful husband of late. As MODOK flounders at work, [his wife] Jodie has found success through her mommy blog-turned-lifestyle brand. This disconnect forces them to re-evaluate their relationship." In other words, it sounds like many of the show's explosions and intensity--and laughs--in the series will come via navigating the complexity of relationships.
"We obviously love the character as this big villain who is always trying to take over the world and run his evil organization," said Blum. "His design by Jack Kirby is so absurd and monstrous that we thought, where does this guy go at night? Does he go home to a house and have all these mundane things he has to do? Does he have a family we never knew about? The more we discussed, the more it just kind of made us laugh and then we tried to figure out well, what would that family be? Who would marry MODOK and how hard would it be to be his son or to be a daughter in MODOK's image?"
In addition to Oswalt, MODOK also stars Aimee Garcia (Lucifer) as Jodie, Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as their "oddball son" Lou, and Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as their daughter Melissa "who shares her father's striking appearance." Stay tuned for more details, including hopefully a debut date, during tonight's NYCC virtual panel.
