Canopus Taking a Video Card Hiatus
Canopus Taking a Video Card Hiatus-October 2024
Oct 19, 2024 1:20 AM

Canopus Corporation recently announced that it will be taking a "hiatus" from making video accelerators while waiting to see how the market turns out after recent developments, according to Canopus vice president of sales Jim Anderson.

At the same time, Canopus announced the discontinuation of its Spectra 2500 Riva TNT-based card, despite the fact that it had been selling very well.

Canopus denies it is getting out of the video industry, however. The problem behind the Spectra 2500 came from sales of its Voodoo 2-based Pure3D II, of which Canopus was stuck with a surplus after Voodoo2 chip prices dropped considerably in the later half of 1998. Seeing a trend, Canopus produced a shorter initial run for the Spectra 2500 and consequently was unwilling to restart production this month with TNT chip prices beginning to decline.

In the meantime, Canopus will continue support of its video accelerator products, with Glide 3 drivers due for the Pure 3D II in the next week or so. Canopus, however, will continue to produce products in the video-editing and digital-audio markets.
