With Call of Duty: Vanguard's November 5 release, you can get your hands on the new competitive Champion Hill mode, which serves as a successor to Modern Warfare 2019's 2v2 Gunfight mode.
Champion Hill combines four small maps to make one large arena, where you can choose singles, duos, or trios to compete in 60-second rounds of a Deathmatch-style tournament against other squads. Every team begins with a shared pool of lives. In Champion Hill, you want to move through the rounds and work to eliminate all other squads' life count to zero before your squad is eliminated.
Your team only gets 12 combined lives in duos and 18 lives shared in trios, so every life and every dollar earned counts in the Champion Hill arena. After our time in the alpha test, we described this as a mode that feels like an intense mashup of Gunfight and battle royale. Here are our tips to help you become Champion of the Hill.
Make sure that you have your pistol out when buying a new weapon from the Buy Station, as a weapon purchase will swap out whatever gun you're holding. Presumably, you'd want the submachine gun over the pistol, but just make sure to hold the right weapon when approaching the Buy Station.
Armor plates are also something to consider in early rounds. A good weapon and armor plates will be most beneficial, so you can stay alive and earn more cash for perks and streaks in later rounds.
After you have the essentials, you can use a later Buy round to consider something like a Spy Plane to reveal enemy positions on the minimap, or maybe purchase the Ghost perk to keep you off your opponent's radar. High Alert will likely be one of the most beneficial perks, as it alerts you when enemies outside of your view see you. And the Tracker perk lets you see highlights of enemy footprints.
Trainyard overlooking the map's tokenHere are the token locations for each map:
Airstrip's token is the only one of the four that doesn't spawn at the center of the map. It can be found on the shorter of the two lookout towers on the airstrip. You have to use the ladder to reach the token, making it a very risky venture.Courtyard's token is between the two central buildings at the map’s center.Market's token is very exposed and sitting right on the market’s central platform.Trainyard's token sits in an oval-shaped structure of sandbags and wooden boards at the map’s center.
This feels especially important when playing Courtyard, which is a map that features a plethora of destructible wooden walls. It's easy to get trapped and wallbanged at the start of a round here, so I think it's really important to get out of the spawn quick, and start shooting through the wooden walls to create a better line of sight.
Vanguard's Champion Hill is even more intense and strategic than Call of Duty's 2v2 Gunfight tournament, given the respawns and Buy feature. These tips will hopefully help you become a champion.
Call of Duty: Vanguard will introduce a pre-season of content from November 5 to December 2, and Season 1 starts on December 2. We'll be updating this guide if any maps or features are added post-launch.
