Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Will Make You Question Your Morality as a Player, Says Dev-October 2024
Oct 24, 2024 8:11 AM

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is betting heavily on the single-player campaign once again, after axing that completely with last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

Infinity Ward even hired two former Naughty Dog developers, Taylor Kurosaki (credited for working on all the Uncharted Games) and Jacob Minkoff (Lead Designer on Uncharted 3 and The Last of Us), who are now respectively the Narrative Director and Campaign Gameplay Director of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

In an interview appeared on the latest 'The Official PlayStation Magazine' (August 2019, issue 164), the two explained how the narrative will be much more impactful and heavy with regards to its themes.

Kurosaki: What does Modern Warfare mean in 2019? It means the battlefield is blurrier than ever. It means enemies don’t wear uniforms, it means that collateral damage is a real part of the equation. People having to make split-second life-or-death decisions.

Minkoff: If we’re going to tell a story about characters finding their line and being pushed past [it], feeling like things are morally grey and they’re uncomfortable with it, then we need to make the player, in gameplay, feel uncomfortable. We’re going to make you question your own morality as a player.

Of course, authenticity is also going to be a major factor so that gamers can feel fully immersed in this hard-hitting, gritty storyline. That's why Infinity Ward got expertise from real soldiers on how to better portray the playable characters.

Kurosaki: We had Navy SEALs come into our office. with plastic toy guns showing us how they would clear a stairwell, how they would gain entry into a door.

It's hard to say whether Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be able to even get close to the levels, but it does look like it will be one campaign players may want to experience instead of skipping directly to multiplayer once the game drops on October 25th.
