Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Aims to Top PUBG and Fortnite, No Advantages With PS4 Pro/XB1X-October 2024

Last week Activision and Treyarch broadcast their big Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 reveal, during which they confirmed a lot of rumors, including the big one that Treyarch was diving into the battle royale genre. The Blackout battle royale mode certainly sounds promising, but will it stack up favorably next to genre-leaders PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite? In an interview with the Australian site Finder, Black Ops 4 game designer Matt Scronce said the goal is to not just match, but one-up the battle royale competition…

“We wouldn't do [a battle royale mode] if we didn't think we could do it best and better than everybody else. We've got a huge library of content, ten years of history, we've got the best gunplay out there, we've got the best movement, so we're not too worried about it. Honestly, we're just worried about making this damn thing as fun as possible.

And look, we're in a world where there's plenty of room for multiple titles. People would sometimes ask ‘How are Battlefield and CoD going to exist in the same industry?’ We do. What we're doing is going to be different. Some players will gravitate to us and people may gravitate towards other games. We're making something that, when we play it, we have a whole lotta fun and I think we can grow out from that.”

In the same interview, Black Ops 4 senior producer Yale Miller wouldn’t rule out loot boxes, saying it’s up to Activision to decide how such things are implemented. He also briefly touched on Treyarch’s approach to the Xbox One X/PS4 Pro, saying all versions of the game will run at 60 fps, with the souped-up consoles focusing strictly on increased resolution and graphical fidelity. In other words, nobody will have an unfair advantage.
