Bungie: Destiny not "dumbed down" for current-gen-May 2024
May 13, 2025 1:07 AM

Players who pick up a current-generation version of Destiny in 2014 shouldn't worry about their game being "dumbed down" compared to the next-generation iterations, Bungie has said. As part of the latest Bungie Weekly Update, the developer said its game engine--Grognok--was designed with scalability in mind.

"We knew when we started on this game that we would want to release it on a lot of boxes. We also knew that, among all the trails that our Guardians would blaze, some of them would lead to the next generation of gaming," Bungie said.

"Thus, we built ourselves a new game engine that would let us bring the noise to a lot of consoles," the developer added. "Basically, we can envision a big, beautiful world in our development environment, and then deliver that world to consoles in a way that maximizes its capabilities to make magic happen."

Destiny is currently in development for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. A PC version has not been ruled out. Bungie said in February that all versions of Destiny will contain the developer's "full vision" for the title, though it remains to be seen what specific differences there are between generations.

Not all developers believe cross-generation development is a good idea. The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red CEO Marcin Iwinski explained in April that developers must compromise when making games for current- and next-generation platforms. Furthermore, these compromises may negatively impact gamers, he argued.

A beta for Destiny will launch on all announced platforms in early 2014, before the full game rolls out later that year.
