Bride Of Frankenstein Reboot Might Still Happen Despite Dark Universe Failure--Report-November 2024
Nov 1, 2024 6:34 PM

One of the biggest casualties of Universal's failed Dark Universe franchise was a new version of the horror classic Bride of Frankenstein. The film was set to be the second in the studio's series of classic monster movie reboots, but the failure of The Mummy quickly killed off the whole enterprise. But it has now been reported that a new version of Bride of Frankenstein might still happen.

According to Variety, producer Amy Pascal is looking to get Bride of Frankenstein off the ground at Universal. While the Dark Universe is dead (apart from its two-tweet Twitter account), the studio is still looking to make films based on its monster movie properties. The site states that Pascal moved from Sony to Universal last year, and Bride of Frankenstein is one of the projects she is hoping to get into production there. Jurassic Park writer David Koepp and Spider-Man director Sam Raimi are among the talent that she has approached so far about the project.

Now Playing: The Invisible Man (2020) - Official Trailer

The big difference between the films that were planned as part of Dark Universe and the newer projects is budget and tone. A new version of The Invisible Man hits theaters later this month, and that has a far more modest budget than the hugely expensive The Mummy. In addition, The Invisible Man is a scary new version from Saw co-creator Leigh Whannell and producers Blumhouse, while The Mummy was an action-focused Tom Cruise vehicle.

What this means for a potential new version of Bride of Frankenstein is unknown, as the Dark Universe version had two big stars (Angelina Jolie and Javier Bardem) attached, as well as a high-profile director (Beauty & The Beast's Bill Condon) on board. While Variety's sources state that Jolie has remained interested in the project, it also notes that there was a public falling out between Jolie and Pascal, following revelations contained in 2014 Sony cyber-attack.

Other Universal monster movies currently in development include The Invisible Woman, to be directed by Elizabeth Banks, and Dark Army, which has Bridesmaids director Paul Feig attached. For more check out, GameSpot's guide to the biggest upcoming horror movies of 2020.
