Boxed Super Mario Bros Wonder sales beat those of Spider-Man 2 in the UK last week, thereby overtaking the first spot on the sales chart.
Last week, the highly-anticipated sequel to 2018's Spider-Man claimed the first spot on the UK boxed sales chart, thereby beating Nintendo's latest Super Mario entry. This week, however, it's Mario Bros. Wonder who came out on top, beating Spider-Man 2. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, sales for Super Mario Bros Wonder dropped 55% in sales, but Spider-Man 2 dropped 69% week-on-week. We're talking about boxed sales in the UK, and it will be interesting to see how both titles perform in other regions, both boxed and digitally.
Still, the new Mario Bros Wonder and Spider-Man 2 are among the biggest boxed game launches of the year with Spider-Man 2 in fourth and Mario Wonder in fifth.
Both Super Mario Bros Wonder and Spider-Man 2 launched globally on October 20. As reported last week, sales of Spider-Man 2 already surpassed 2.5 million units within 24 hours, thereby becoming the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever. As also reported last week, following the game's worldwide launch, Super Mario Bros Wonder became the fastest-selling Mario entry to date in Europe. No stats from other regions (aside from UK boxed sales) have been shared just yet.
Super Mario Bros Wonder is available now for the Switch, whereas Spider-Man 2 is available now for PlayStation 5. Here's what we wrote about these two titles in our launch reviews. "Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the plumber’s best platformer this generation", we wrote. "We haven’t been able to say that of a 2D Mario for a long time, but this game measures up to the best and most beloved side-scrollers Nintendo has ever made, delivering joyously-creative level design and rock-solid platforming in a gorgeous wrapper. Get ready to kick it old school, because 2D Mario is back on top of the flagpole."
"Marvel's Spider-Man 2 feels like the perfect, albeit safe, evolution of the formula first introduced with the 2018 game", Alessio Palumbo wrote. "With a highly emotional story, much-improved traversal, great visuals and performance, and industry-leading accessibility, this sequel is very likely to win over most fans of the original."
