After a long wait and numerous delays, Disney's Black Widow came out swinging over the weekend and landed a gigantic $80 million opening at 4,160 screens across the North American box office. This figure blew past early predictions and the record set by F9: The Fast Saga, and international numbers were also positive as Black Widow made $78 million across the rest of the world, according to Box Office Mojo.

　　The big surprise here was the total earned through Premier Access rentals on Disney's streaming platform, as Black Widow added another $60 million to its weekend haul. Streaming figures are usually kept secret by Disney, with the company having not yet revealed any data yet for its other big releases from this year that shared a cinematic and Premier Access release, Cruella and Raya and the Last Dragon.

　　Disney claims that the combined theatrical and Disney+ Premier Access opening makes it the only film to reach and surpass the $100 million mark since the coronavirus pandemic began, and has the third-highest weekend for an origin story film in its franchise after Black Panther and Captain Marvel. With early reviews also being mostly positive, that word of mouth with an audience hungry for a new Marvel tentpole release helped Black Widow earn big at the box office.

　　Disney will likely look to keep this moment with its next big film release, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on September 3.

　　"Black Widow's strong performance this weekend affirms our flexible distribution strategy of making franchise films available in theaters for a true cinematic experience and, as COVID concerns continue globally, providing choice to consumers who prefer to watch at home on Disney+," Disney media and entertainment distribution chairman Kareem Daniel said in a statement.

　　As for the rest of the domestic box office, not too much changed for every other film following in Black Widow's wake. F9 settled for second place, Forever Purge limped to a fourth start debut, and A Quiet Place Part II continued to do steady business.
