Aaryn Flynn was recently interviewed by CBC Radio and on this occasion, the General Manager of BioWare discussed the story of Anthem, the new IP announced at E3 2017 in Los Angeles.
Anthem was, without a doubt, one of the stars at E3 2017, though we still know very little about the new Bioware project. Anthem will be a new experience for the development team and for Bioware fans, but it seems that the company has very clear ideas about the structure of the game and its narrative background.
Like Mass Effect, the story of Anthem will be science fiction, but at the same time, it will deviate from the latter series to get closer to the style of IPs like Star Wars style and Marvel.
Specifically, Flynn has stated the following:
The story is that you are part of humanity, and you’re a member of a group called the “Freelancers”, who are out there to protect and save humanity on an alien planet far away.
It’s in a genre we call “science-fantasy”, it’s very much like Star Wars, very much like the Marvel universe where you see a lot of amazing things happening but we don’t worry too much about why they’re happening or how they’re happening, the science of it. Mass Effect is more of a real hardcore science-fiction IP, this one is much more about just having fun in a game world that is lush and exotic and really sucks you in.
Anthem is expected to release by the end of 2018 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, and with this new project, Electronic Arts and Bioware want to start a ten-year journey, which will bring players to explore an incredibly vast and rich world full of nuances.
