Better Call Saul's Michael Mando Discusses Major Events Of Season 6, Episode 3 With Nacho Varga-October 2024

In the latest episode of Better Call Saul, "Rock and a Hard Place," some serious stuff goes down involving one of the crime drama's main characters, Nacho Varga. Actor Michael Mando has broken things down, offering his take on the episode and more. Major spoilers for Better Call Saul follow below.

In the episode, Varga meets his fate. Varga never appears in Breaking Bad, so fans speculated that he might die, and indeed he did--and in dramatic fashion.

Varga was a double agent who was on the run after the failed assassination of Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton). He survived the Salamanca twins and went to great lengths to stay alive, even jumping inside an abandoned oil tanker in one key scene and holding his breath to avoid detection.

Varga is finally free, but not for long. In the final moments of the episode, Varga meets with the Salamancas where some major drama goes down. He delivers an impassioned monologue to Hector (Mark Margolis) in which he reveals he was the one responsible for Hector's life in a wheelchair.

"So when you're sitting in your shi**y nursing home and you're sucking down on your Jello night after night for the rest of your life, you think of me, you twisted f**k," Varga says. He then steals Juan Bolsa's gun and has the opportunity to wipe out Hector or any other cartel associate, but instead turns the gun on himself. In doing so, he conceals Gus' involvement and takes the rest of his secrets to the grave.

Speaking to Variety, Mando said it was an "unbelievable experience" filming Varga's death sequence.

The image of Nacho is the image of sacrifice, true love and bravery. It's not the image of revenge. The ultimate act that defines the character is the act of sacrifice, and not anger, but love," he said.

Mando went on to say that he Varga had the opportunity to escape his fate, but he knew that if he ran, the cartel would come after his family, including his father whom he loved dearly. "It's in that moment that Nacho knows that he's going to walk back into hell and sacrifice himself for the love of his father," he said.

Head to Variety to hear everything Mando had to say about Varga's death.

Better Call Saul Season 6 is airing now, with new installments premiering each Monday. The first half of the final season wraps up on May 23, with the final wave of six episodes set to begin July 11.
