In an effort to differentiate it from Electronic Arts' Battlefield series, and the dozens of other games with "battle" in the title, Codemasters announced that it is renaming its upcoming WWII strategy game, previously titled Battlefield Command.
Now called Wartime Command: The Battle for Europe 1939-1945, the game combines real-time tactical strategy and 3D graphics à la Battlefront's Combat Mission 2.
Covering every major European battle of World War II, the game's focus is on historical accuracy, and the developers have used archival photos, military maps, and design schematics to faithfully re-create landscapes, settings, and vehicles. Wartime Command will also feature highly realistic vehicle damage, allowing players to shoot tracks off tanks and disable cannons by blowing their barrels apart.
Wartime Command is the latest title developed by Russian studio 1C, makers of IL-2 Sturmovik, and is scheduled for a Q2 2004 release in the US.
