Batgirl Directors Are Meeting With James Gunn After $90 Million Movie Cancellation
Batgirl Directors Are Meeting With James Gunn After $90 Million Movie Cancellation-October 2024
Oct 21, 2024 4:15 AM

The $90 million Batgirl movie was canceled during post-production, but the directors of the project aren't feeling totally burned by Warner Bros. Discovery, saying they are open to returning to the DC film universe and even have a meeting booked with new DC boss James Gunn.

Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the canceled movie and some of their future plans. Asked if they would work with WB Discovery again, Fallah said, "Yeah, we'd still work with them."

"But on the condition that the movie comes out. I mean, if Warner says, 'Do you want to do the next Batman or Superman?,' of course we'll say yes. Just so long as the movie comes out!" Fallah added.

Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad director James Gunn, the new co-CEO of DC Studios, reached out to the directors after Batgirl was canceled to offer his support. Now that he's the new top boss, Gunn is seemingly keen to talk to Arbi and Fallah in a more official capacity.

"The meetings are in the books," Arbi said.

If the directors get another swing at a DC movie, would they be open to trying again for a Batman universe film? Arbi said in the future when The Batman director Matt Reeves is finished, maybe then he and Fallah could take another stab.

"Maybe in the future one day if they ask us to do that, we wouldn't say no. But you can dream, right!?" Arbi said.

The Batgirl was canceled after it had just begun the first stage of editing--it needed a lot more work, Arbi said. Arbi said the movie's cancellation was difficult for the pair because they were following in the footsteps of Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan. And then the movie was canceled at the 11th hour.

"This is something that never happened before, so we've kind of become part of movie history without even trying!," Arbi said.

Arbi and Fallah's new movie, Rebel, is an action-thriller following two Muslim Belgian brothers during the war in Syria.
