Get ready for a potent blast of GameCube memories, because as rumored, the Baten Kaitos series is making its grand return! These days, Monolith Soft are primarily known for their Xenosaga and Xenoblade Chronicles games, but in the early 2000s they collaborated with developer Tri-Crescendo on Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean and a prequel Baten Kaitos Origins. Both were quite unlike anything before or since, featured beautifully-detailed pre-rendered worlds and a unique card-based combat system, and now players get to experience the games again.
During the most recent Nintendo Direct, Baten Kaitos I & II HD Remaster was announced. Co-developed by Monolith Soft and Bandai Namco, this new package packs in both the original Baten Kaitos and Baten Kaitos Origins (which was known as Baten Kaitos II in Japan). This looks like a fairly straightforward remaster, with the game's original art and pre-rendered backgrounds being retained. The game's look is a bit dated at this point, but this is still a nice package for those looking to experience an under-appreciated slice of JPRG history. You can check out a trailer for Baten Kaitos I & II HD Remaster, below.
