Baldur’s Gate 3 in the Playtesting Stage on Xbox, 2023 Release is Still in the Cards
Baldur’s Gate 3 in the Playtesting Stage on Xbox, 2023 Release is Still in the Cards-October 2024
Oct 27, 2024 10:36 PM

Xbox owners will still be getting the Christmas gift of a Baldur’s Gate 3 port this year according to an update from Larian Studios boss Swen Vincke. Of course, this was originally not in the cards, as Larian said Xbox owners would have to wait until at least 2024 as they attempted to get local co-op working on the Xbox Series S. Eventually, Microsoft bent, allowing Larian to release Baldur’s Gate 3 without local co-op on Xbox Series S, making a 2024 release possible. All that said, we haven’t really received an update on BG3 for Xbox in a while.

Thankfully, according to Vincke, the Xbox version of BG3 is currently in the playtesting phase and a 2023 release is still on track. No specific release date was provided, but sometime in December seems like a reasonable timeline.

“Latest on the Xbox [version of Baldur’s Gate 3] -- being actively playtested, still on schedule for this year. We'll announce the exact release date when we're sure it's done.”

Microsoft has said Baldur’s Gate 3 splitscreen could still happen on Xbox Series S, but it will likely take quite a bit of engineering to make it happen. For now, Larian is getting the game out with some sacrifices on Xbox Series S (something that may become more common as the system’s lack of power becomes an issue for current-gen-exclusive titles). Haven’t been keeping up with BG3? Wccftech’s Francesco De Meo couldn’t say enough good things in his very positive 9.5 out of 10 review…

“With its engaging story, charming characters, extremely dynamic world that constantly adapts to the player's actions and choice and a solid tactical combat system, Baldur's Gate 3 is among the best CRPGs ever released. A wonky interface, the lack of some quality-of-life features and Larian Studios' trademark save scumming design impact the experience, but they're only minor issues that don't take away too much from the whole experience. After years in development, Baldur's Gate 3 definitely exceeded all expectations, and in the best possible way.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 can currently be played on PC and PS5.
