Baldur’s Gate 3 Director Wants to See More cRPGs in the Future
Baldur’s Gate 3 Director Wants to See More cRPGs in the Future-September 2024
Sep 20, 2024 6:39 AM

Following the multiple wins at the Golden Joysticks Awards, where Baldur's Gate 3 snatched seven prizes (Best Storytelling, Best Visual Design, Studio Of The Year, Best Game Community, Best Supporting Performer for Astarion's voice actor, PC Game Of The Year, and Ultimate Game Of The Year), Game Director Swen Vincke spoke to Gamesradar about the win. The CEO of Larian Studios expressed hope that the success of Baldur's Gate 3 could fuel more interest in the cRPG genre going forward.

We've always been very focused on just making our game, and a lot of people have attached a lot of things to that because the game turned out the way that we wanted it to be. So I hope there will be more games like a cRPG type of game. It's a game I like to play, and a lot of people in the industry like to play as well. So, If those games come out, and they don't have a story that we know already, I think that will be great. I look forward to those types of games.

Indeed, Vincke himself admitted that prior to launch, the studio wasn't entirely sure whether there was a large enough market for a triple-A cRPG. Such a thing had never been attempted before, after all. Of course, Baldur's Gate 3 had the significant advantage of being the third entry in the most known franchise throughout the whole genre.

It'll be interesting to see whether big companies take the cue from this performance to make their own cRPG titles. Obsidian's Josh Sawyer openly said he'd love to make Pillars of Eternity 3 with a budget akin to Baldur's Gate 3's, provided Microsoft agrees to that.

Meanwhile, fans of the genre can look forward to Owlcat's Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader (out on December 7), Drop Bear Bytes' Broken Roads (delayed last week to early 2024), and Dreamate's New Arc Line (out at some point in 2024).
