During today's State of Play we saw a deeper look at the gameplay of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and other games that will be available for PlayStation consoles. One of the announcements in the stream was the release date for Baldur's Gate 3, with an additional surprise to boot. The game is also going to be available on PlayStation 5 consoles with cross-save progression. As you might imagine, this confirms things like controller support, and split-screen co-op is also in the game. You can watch the latest trailer that reveals the release date for Baldur's Gate 3 below.
As you might have noticed above, one of the highlights of the trailer (besides the release date) comes in the form of J.K. Simmons voicing one of Baldur's Gate 3's three antagonists: General Ketheric Thorm. The PlayStation Blog about the latest trailer (written by Larian Studios Creative Director Swen Vincke) talked about the decision behind casting this character for the role he serves in the game:
Our trailer gave you a first look at General Ketheric Thorm, one of three main antagonists you’ll encounter as you traverse the Forgotten Realms. Ketheric is a man with complex ambitions and motivations, so in searching for his voice, we knew we needed to work with a renowned character actor who could deliver the kind of nuanced performance we were looking for – so we decided to cast JK Simmons (Whiplash, Spider-Man). One take and we knew we’d made the right call.
The blog also hints that we'll learn more about the other antagonists of Baldur's Gate 3 in the coming months ahead of the launch date. Baldur's Gate 3 will be released on PlayStation 5 and PC on August 31, 2023. It's been confirmed that PS5 players who pre-order the Collector's Edition or the Deluxe Edition of the game will be able to play it earlier, as access to it unlocks on August 28, though it will be limited to just Act 1 (out now on PC early access). We talked about the Collector's Edition before, one of the rarest as it will be limited to 25K units worldwide.
Baldur's Gate 3 is already a pretty popular game on PC. Vincke even said that the Early Access sales were 'insane', seemingly breaking a lot of milestones for Larian. The good news is that players who purchased the game on PC early access (including those that will do it ahead of launch) will be automatically upgraded to the Deluxe Edition.
