Avengers: Infinity War Actor Was Supposed To Be In Avengers: Endgame-April 2024

It turns out that actress Carrie Coon (HBO's The Leftovers, FX's Fargo) was slated to reprise her portrayal of Proxima Midnight in 2019's Avengers: Endgame, but was unable to "because of a conflict." Speaking with Entertainment Weekly for a recent interview, Coon shared her experiences first being cast by Anthony and Joe Russo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and how her role as the super-villain grew from being a voice-over gig to also comprising motion capture, and then an invitation to come back again after her character's death in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War.

"I got a voice-over audition. It was not specified what the project was. They were being very secretive about it, but I was given some of the lines that did end up being in the film," Coon said. "[The Russos] were excited about the possibility of me actually physicalizing the character as well, and they invited me to come down to Atlanta. I was pregnant and doing a play at the time, so I flew down and was on set with them for about 12 hours."

In Infinity War, Proxima Midnight is defeated by Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch, but Coon joked in the new interview that "no one ever dies" in Marvel projects. In this new interview, Coon shares how she was invited back by the Russos but was unavailable, so stuntwoman Monique Ganderton stepped in for the motion capture instead. Still, Coon says it's plausible she will be back in a future Marvel project.

"It's very possible I could have my own Avengers movie next," Coon says with a smile. "But I wouldn't hold your breath."

The next film slated for release in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Black Widow, which is due out on November 6. Starring Scarlett Johansson, the movie is directed by Cate Shortland (The Secret Life Of Us, Joy), and features a screenplay by Eric Pearson (Godzilla vs. Kong, Agent Carter).
