Avengers Directors Love The Idea Of Chris Evans As Wolverine
Avengers Directors Love The Idea Of Chris Evans As Wolverine-September 2024
Sep 20, 2024 2:43 AM

Directing duo and brothers Joe and Anthony Russo have given some thought to how they would further fancast the MCU. In a recent Comic Book interview, the pair discussed Chris Evans--who portrays Captain America--and why he should be seriously considered to someday play Wolverine.

"Evans has incredible range and great physicality, and he's real good at body control," said Joe Russo. "He's an incredible actor. I don't mean this in a bad way, but he's nothing like Captain America. Steve Rogers is very controlled and quiet, understated. Chris is energetic and funny and charismatic, and he brings a lot of energy to set. I'd love to see him do something like Wolverine."

Although Hugh Jackman has portrayed Wolverine since his appearance in the 2000 X-Men movie, and the X-Men are now a part of the MCU, it is plausible that Marvel will be looking for a new Wolverine. Jackman hung up his claws and walked away from the role with the somber 2017 film Logan, which depicts an aging Logan suffering as his healing ability is failing--and also caregiving for a 90-year-old Charles Xavier, who suffers from dementia and is having destructive telepathic seizures.

There's at least one very real reason why Evans could realistically play Wolverine--the MCU's forays into the multiverse, particularly Doctor Strange 2, has plausibly opened the door for pretty much anything. There's also at least one very real reason why Evans could realistically not play Wolverine--he's seemingly retired from playing Captain America, and may be taking a break from the MCU. But again, anything could be possible.

Marvel veteran directors the Russos reteamed with Evans for Netflix's spy thriller The Gray Man, which will hit the streaming service on July 22. The film features Ryan Gosling as Court Gentry AKA Sierra Six AKA "the gray man." Evans plays his "psychopathic" adversary, former CIA agent Lloyd Hansen, who is hunting him down across the world with the help of agent Dani Miranda, who is played by Ana de Armas.

As Phase 4 is winding to a close, Marvel boss Kevin Feige has revealed that fans will start to see where the saga is headed next in the coming months.
