Avatar Sequel Will Start Production Again Soon, New Plot Details Revealed-September 2024
Sep 22, 2024 8:34 AM

Movie production is currently on hold across Hollywood, and it's unclear when most films will start shooting again. However, there's one big movie that is about to restart production thousands of miles away from the US. It's James Cameron's Avatar sequel, which is shooting in New Zealand. Avatar producer Jon Landau has stated that he will be returning to New Zealand very soon and has also spoken about the movie's plot.

Landau revealed the news via a post on Instagram. He also spoke to New Zealand website RNZ about the decision to go back, and revealed that a smaller crew "who are essential to our filming needs" will be returning to resume production on the movie. Check the post out below:

Our #Avatar sets are ready — and we couldn’t be more excited to be headed back to New Zealand next week. Check out the Matador, a high speed forward command vessel (bottom) and the Picador jetboat (top) — can’t wait to share more.

In the interview, Landau praised the way the New Zealand government had handled the COVID-19 crisis, and stated that the filmmakers had a plan to resume work safely. "We feel very comfortable because of the actions of your government and also the responsibility the people took to really curb the virus there," he said. "So we feel we're coming back to the safest place in the world possible thanks to a team of people that we've worked with. We believe we have a very thoughtful, detailed and diligent safety plan that will keep everybody as safe as possible in these unprecedented times."

Landau also revealed a few plot details about the Avatar sequel. "This is the story of the Sully family and what one does to keep their family together," he said. "Jake and Neytiri have a family in this movie, they are forced to leave their home, they go out and explore the different regions of Pandora, including spending quite a bit of time on the water, around the water, in the water."

There are several Avatar movies due over the next few years, with the first sequel releasing in December 2021. Live action photography for that movie was completed in November last year. Several behind-the-scenes images from last year's production have been released over the past few weeks, including one of the actors in a swimming pool of reflective balls.
