Atari Games' New Release a Gas
Atari Games' New Release a Gas-March 2024
Mar 18, 2025 11:07 AM

A new coin-op will be burrowing into arcades in early August, but there'd better be some wall space, as the driving game, Vapor TRX (that's T-R-X, not "trax" or "trex") will be linkable for up to four machines. From separate single-seat units, up to four players will compete in a battle of16 vehicles, consisting of human opponents and/or drones in what is more of a high-speed hovering air race from an aerodynamic rocket than a gravity-bound auto race.

There will be six different vehicles to choose from, each with unique attributes; for example, the Stratovaxx has the fastest possible acceleration, but the handling is rough, whereas the SaberXT handles extremely well, has fairly decent speed, yet doesn't have the acceleration power. And of course, there'll be the all-around maximum performance vehicle, the Skydozer.

The four tracks offer a variety of environments with day and night options and varying degrees of difficulty and shortcuts. The Eagle Canyon track, for instance, will be an early-morning race on an easy course; the Midnight Bullet will be a medium-difficulty night challenge; The Alpine Edge is a day course yet a hard race; while the extreme race is also a day track yet the most difficult setting.

Although the objective is simple - win the race - Vapor TRX is more than a straightaway competition. Players will collect power-ups, WipeOut XL style, that consist of homing missiles, turbo boosts, positronic cannons, heat-seekers, and more. So not only will you have to maintain the best speed and handling to come in first, you'll have to eliminate your opposition, avoid your opposition's weapons, and, further, avoid obstacles, such as the environment in general, on the tracks.

Will Vapor TRX ever hit the consoles? Videogames.com asked Atari Games' senior product manager Derryl DePriest: "It's a safe bet that anything we do in coin-op may end up on one of the consoles of the day." He added that the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 would likely be the systems considered, if considered, but wasn't sure as to whether or not his comment would include the Dreamcast.
