Apple announced today that customers spent more than $10 billion on the App Store in 2013. This includes over $1 billion from nearly 3 billion app downloads in December alone, making it the most successful month in App Store history. To date, developers have earned $15 billion, Apple said.
It is difficult to put this number into context, as Microsoft and Sony do not disclose revenue data for Xbox Live or PlayStation Network. However, we do know how important the App Store is to Electronic Arts, as the publisher said last year that the marketplace is the publisher's biggest revenue driver overall.
EA made $90 million from mobile and tablet games during its first fiscal quarter of 2014--though it's unclear how this breaks down between iOS and Android.
More than one million apps are currently available in the App Store, including more than 500,000 native iPad apps.
