TOKYO - The AOU 2000 Amusement Expo held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, started today, and our Japanese correspondent Yutaka Ohbuchi was on hand to check out the latest games from the arcade scene. The show floor was smaller in area than in previous years, and most of the games on display were just new or alternate versions of already-existing titles - an indication that the arcade market is still continuing to grow weaker. Fighting games have become titles that only appeal to a limited audience, the hard-core fighting gamers. Konami's Beatmania and clones are still continuing to show popularity, but who knows how long that will last.
But don't lose all hope, fellow arcade gamers. The recent announcement of the PlayStation2-compatible arcade board by Sony Computer Entertainment may bring the energy that the industry has needed. Also, most game companies are looking into network-oriented arcade games, and this may just be a time of transition as the industry prepares for its next step.
