With Star Wars: Rogue One's massive debut accounted for, Disney movies have now made $7 billion at the global box office this year, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That's a new industry record, surpassing Universal's record of $6.9 billion last year, which was fueled by the huge success of Jurassic World, Furious 7, Minions, 50 Shades of Grey, and Pitch Perfect 2.

　　In North America, Disney has an incredible 24 percent box office marketshare, meaning almost a quarter of revenue from ticket sales have been for Disney movies. With a week and half left to go in 2016, and Christmas break coming up for movie-watching, Disney still has time to expand its lead even further.

　　Disney's huge 2016 is attributed to massive releases like Captain America: Civil War ($1.15 billion), Finding Dory ($1.03 billion), Zootopia ($1.02 billion) and The Jungle Book ($967 million). Another Marvel movie, Doctor Strange, pulled in $652.9 million, while the animated film Moana has made more than $280 million since its Thanksgiving Day debut.

　　"This historic achievement is possible because all of our film studios are bringing their absolute best to the table, telling great stories of all kinds that resonate with audiences across borders, gender, and generations," Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said in a statement.

　　"These films work because each one has not only something for everyone, but everything for someone. It's our honor to be able to create these experiences for audiences, and we're thankful to them for continuing to come out to the theater with us."
