Avatar: The Way of Water's reign at the top of the US box office has finally come to an end--as expected--when the film dropped from first to third place in its eighth week. The new king of the box office, at least for now, is Knock at the Cabin, M. Might Shyamalan's new horror film starring Dave Bautista. In second place is 80 for Brady, a sports comedy with an ensemble cast that includes Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field.
While Avatar 2's run may not have seen it beat the original film, the sequel did phenomenal numbers across the world according to Box Office Mojo. Domestically, Avatar 2 has made over $636 million, and in international markets, it earned over $1,538 billion. It's the fourth-highest grossing movie of all time, joining Cameron's other films Titanic and Avatar in that elite club, and with the momentum from its box office performance, Cameron is moving ahead with his planned sequels, beginning with Avatar 3 in 2024.
The rest of the box office top ten saw a few familiar films shift downwards slightly. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish dropped from second to fourth place, and has so far made over $368 million across the globe.
The Tom Hanks-starring A Man Called Otto dropped to sixth place, and the thriller about a killer AI companion, M3GAN, is hovering around seventh place. Fans of Korean pop band BTS helped that movie reach fifth place in the US, as the documentary of the group's October 2022 Busan show earned over $6 million across more than 1,100 screens.
