While Activision is currently captaining the billion dollar boat that is its military first-person shooter Call of Duty franchise, the publisher is also involved in grassroots development efforts. Today, the megapublisher announced the winners of the first wave of the Activision Independent Games Competition, giving $250,000 to two developers. The prototype of Dstroyd Angstadt showed to Activision before he scored $175,000.
Taking home the top prize of $175,000 was Peter Angstadt for his 2D game Dstroyd. The game is described by the developer as "real-time strategy married with ballistics game," and Angstadt said he drew most of his inspiration for the title from the turn-based multiplayer game Gunbound.
The second-prize winner was Engient's building battle game Rigonauts: Broadside, whose developers took home $75,000 for it. Engient was cofounded by former Capcom developer Ian Slutz and is currently staffed by Slutz, Jason Earp, and Sang Han.
Details concerning the second phase of the competition--which will award another $250,000--will be announced shortly, according to Activision. For more on the Activision Independent Games Competition, head to the landing page at Activision.com.
