The US movie market is back. The latest box office numbers are in, and A Quiet Place II and Cruella both made lots of money as people return to the cinemas across the country.
A Quiet Place II is projected to have made $57 million for its four-day Memorial Day opening weekend across 3,726 screens for a $15,700 average per theater. The original Quiet Place movie made about $60 million over its three-day opening weekend in 2018.
Paramount's Chris Aronson said in a statement to Deadline, "How many times in their lifetime have movie theaters been threatened? People weren't going to be locked up in their homes forever and this weekend was the most our country has been open in a quite some time."
Aronson added: "There's a pent-up demand for many to resume their normal summer activities including baseball games, barbecues, going to the beach and vacationing. Moviegoing is a part of that fabric. We had a movie that is quintessential in being a communal experience in a theater and audiences responded."
IMAX's Rich Gelfond said A Quiet Place II's results this weekend represent a very good result, and not just in the context of the pandemic.
"A Quiet Place Part II is the first domestic release this year to cross the threshold from 'great opening weekend given the pandemic' to 'great opening weekend, period,'" he said. "Offering undeniable proof that the domestic box office is back."
Disney's Cruella starring Emma Stone made $26.5 million at 3,892 theaters over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, for an average of $6,800 per theater. The major difference here is that Cruella is also available on Disney+ with Premier access for $30.
This past weekend was also notable because it was the first time that a Friday-Sunday weekend passed $100 million in total box office receipts since the weekend of March 6-8 2020. Head to Deadline to see a comprehensive and informative. breakdown of the weekend's box office numbers.
