TOKYO - Sony Computer Entertainment held its fifth annual PlayStation Awards (which celebrates best-selling titles) last night. This year, 24 titles were given honors. During the ceremony, Ken Kutaragi, president of SCEI, announced that new details for the next-generation PlayStation, as well as a prototype unit, will be revealed at the Fall Tokyo Game Show '99. The show will begin on September 17.
According to Sony's news release, Kutagari also revealed that the chip used for the PlayStation 2 will be mass produced starting in July, and that the PlayStation 2 itself would begin production in October.
Details for Sony's next-generation PlayStation system, such as price and launch titles, are likely to be announced at the Fall Tokyo Game Show '99 as well.
