Square Enix USA has today announced that its PlayOnline service now has more than 500,000 registered users in North America and Japan combined. Strong holiday sales of Final Fantasy XI played a large part in PlayOnline reaching this milestone, so the number of active characters in the game is now just a little under a million.
Final Fantasy XI is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game in which PS2 and PC players undertake adventures in the fantasy world of Vana'diel. Both versions of the game are already available in Japan, although only the PC version is currently available in North America, where PS2 owners will have to wait until March to get their hands on a copy.
