It's not much of a surprise that people in Japan lined up in droves to buy Nintendo's latest handheld--the 3DS--on its release to the public last weekend. According to the online edition of Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun (translated by Andriasang.com), the initial shipment of 400,000 3DS units sold out within a day of the unit's release last Saturday on February 26.

　　400,000 of these were sold out on the first day.

　　Nintendo plans to sell 1.5 million systems in Japan by March 31, which is the end of the fiscal year for the company. On a worldwide scale, Nintendo expects to ship out 4 million units by the end of its aforementioned fiscal year.

　　The Nintendo 3DS will see its US launch on March 27, while Europe receives it two days earlier. The handheld will also arrive in Asia and Australia near the end of March. For our coverage on the new console, check out our launch centre.
