The 3DS has now sold more units in Japan than the PS3.

"It's a-me, outselling more than Sony!" According to a recent Media Create report (via Nintendo Life and Eurogamer), Nintendo has sold a total of 8,799,378 3DS units in its native country. By comparison, Sony has sold 8,716,260 units of the PS3. The 3DS debuted in March 2011, while the PS3 made its start in November 2006.

On a related note, Sony has sold 1,074,621 units of the PS Vita within a year of its release in Japan back in December 2011. The lifetime sales numbers of its cousin, the PSP, were at 19,488,236 units.
