[Update] To clarify some questions readers have raised in the comments, the Xbox One garnered 1 million sales after launching across 13 countries: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand.

　　The PlayStation 4 reached 1 million, but is currently only available in the US and Canada. Sony's console will release in the EU, Australia, and New Zealand on November 29, and most other countries in December.

　　Both the PS4 and Xbox One will release in Japan in 2014.

　　Although both Sony and Microsoft cite their respective consoles as their fastest-selling gaming machines, neither provided numbers on the total number available on day one, although both also claim to have sold out at the majority of available outlets at launch.

　　While both statistics are impressive and show a strong start, the real impact of both consoles will not be fully known until after this year's holiday sales numbers have been released.

　　Not to be outdone by the PlayStation 4 selling one million consoles in just 24 hours, Microsoft announced today that the Xbox One also achieved the 24 hour, million console milestone.

　　In a press statement, Xbox stated that the over one million consoles have been "sold through," meaning that the number reflects sales to consumers, not shipments to retailers.

　　Yusuf Mehdi, Xbox's corporate Vice President of Marketing and Strategy, wrote, “We are humbled and grateful for the excitement of Xbox fans around the world. Seeing thousands of excited fans lined up to get their Xbox One and their love for gaming was truly a special moment for everyone on the Xbox team. We are working hard to create more Xbox One consoles and look forward to fulfilling holiday gift wishes this season.”
