In an interview with GiantBomb during E3 2017, the creative director of MachineGames, Jens Matthies, has confirmed that Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus will not be the last chapter of the series and that the Swedish studio already has plans for a sequel.
One of the most important announcements on Bethesda's stage was the new chapter in the Wolfenstein series, titled Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, starring once again BJ Blazkovicz in an America occupied by the Nazis. Once again, the game will be single-player only, so no dice if you were hoping for some multiplayer action this time around.
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is a continuation of the game Wolfenstein: The New Order, and - as it turns out - is likely to be the second part of the trilogy.
According to the creative director Jens Matthies, The New Colossus should not be the final chapter of the series: "We always envisioned this as a trilogy. If we get to make the third one--once we introduce Mecha-Hitler, you can't go up from there," Matthies said.
Does that mean there won't be any more Wolfenstein titles? Unlikely. There could be spin-offs, at the very least, though ultimately the future of the series will depend on the response by public and critics obtained by The New Colossus.
The developers also said to be fully satisfied with the gameplay sequences of the title, which took more than 100 actors for a total duration of three hours of cutscenes.
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus will be released on October 27 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC. You can check out Kai's E3 hands-on preview right here.
In related news, Titan Comics and Bethesda have announced comic book prequels dedicated to The Evil Within 2, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and Dishonored 2’s standalone DLC 'Death of the Outsider'.
