Tomb Raider tops the box office
Tomb Raider tops the box office-April 2024
Apr 20, 2025 10:16 AM

Paramount Pictures' Tomb Raider took the top box-office prize in its opening weekend, debuting at number one overall. The film pulled in $48.2 million, good enough for the largest opening weekend ever for a movie based on video games. Angelina Jolie, in her role as Lara Croft, came in ahead of such films as Disney's Atlantis, which gathered a respectable $20.4 million in its nationwide debut weekend, and Shrek, which continued to post strong box-office numbers.

The opening weekend success of the Tomb Raider film, which was backed by a multimillion dollar marketing campaign, came despite mixed reviews. For more on the movie and the game's on which it is based, visit our Tomb Raider Supersite and read reviews of the film linked below.

Entertainment Weekly (Grade: C) - "...though the film is based on a popular video game, it fails to deliver the enticing mindless eye tickle of living inside a video game."

Film.com - "...great soundtrack, great story, great abs, a shame about the script."

Roger Ebert (3/5 Stars) - "Here is a movie so monumentally silly, yet so wondrous to look at, that only a churl could find fault."

TV Guide (2.5/5 stars) - "...the mayhem is all kinetic thrills and no suspense."

Washington Post - "...a movie that doesn't take itself seriously, but is fun enough."
