Tenet Won't Debut On Video On Demand Or Streaming-April 2024
Apr 19, 2025 11:00 AM

On the heels of this week's announcement that Christopher Nolan's Tenet has been delayed indefinitely, now news is coming out further detailing the ways the movie will not be coming out. On a conference call with analysts Thursday, John Stankey, CEO of WarnerMedia parent AT&T responded to a long-floated hope from movie fans that Tenet could be released via streaming before hitting theaters--something that director Nolan has been vocally against. AT&T and WarnerMedia are HBO Max's parent companies, and Stankey has made it clear it won't be premiering Tenet.

"Is [a streaming debut] going to happen with a movie like Tenet or something like Wonder Woman?" Stankey said. "I'd be very surprised if that would be the case. In fact, I can assure you with Tenet, that's not going to be the case."

Later in the call, Stankey elaborated that the longer COVID-19 continues and also continues to impact theaters, "There's going to be some content on the margins that we're going to look at and say it may be better served to be distributed in another construct or a different construct. I love that we have that option now."

Before this week, Tenet was slated to open in theaters on August 12. This was then taken off the table earlier this week, which in turn contributed to AMC Theaters deciding to further postpone its plans to re-open.

Despite Tenet's high-profile status, not much is known about what the film is actually about. All that's really known about Tenet is it follows a secret agent who must prevent another world war. The cast includes Kenneth Branagh, John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Michael Caine, and Elizabeth Debicki.
