Supergirl may be flying to the big screen soon, with a new movie adaptation. Not much is known about the still-early project, but it's likely this would be distinct from the Supergirl TV series about to enter its fourth season on the CW network.
Deadline reports that Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street, The Cloverfield Paradox) is at work on the script. The report also cites rumors, but only rumors, that this could signal a launching point for a new Superman, as it suggests DC is keen on creating a new template for future films starring the Man of Steel. Other films in the pipeline at DC include The Joker set for next October, Birds of Prey starring Margo Robbie as Harley Quinn, and a new Batman movie, likely without Ben Affleck. Aquaman and Shazam are coming soon, having just released their trailers at SDCC.

Now Playing: Aquaman Trailer Breakdown! | SDCC 2018
Another female-led superhero might be just what DC needs, given the critical success of Wonder Woman contrasted against the common criticisms of its other films. DC is also more open than Marvel to putting its heroes in different silos, which is how the CW's The Flash can coexist next to a completely different continuity of the same character in the cinematic universe.
In the comics, Supergirl was another Kryptonian and cousin to Kal-el, aka Superman. The character has gone through several iterations and is one of only a handful of survivors of the doomed planet, alongside Superman and Power Girl.
