Straight Outta Sega Gamers Day-April 2024
Apr 21, 2025 3:17 AM

Direct from Sega's Gamers Day, held in downtown San Francisco all day Thursday, comes this report called in by field reporter Joe Fielder. Through the miracle of modern telephony, he radioed back to GameSpot HQ with information about Dreamcast, its software, and other DC-related miscellany.

The main points: Editors were allowed to play one title, Virtua Fighter 3tb. The game on hand was a more recent build than what was shown at Tokyo Game Show. Sega said that there would be no Internet play with the fighter. And VF3tb will come with an additional disc containing a sneak peek of Yu Suzuki's highly secretive RPG Project Berkeley. In addition, Sega said that it is working on adding Electronic Arts to the Dreamcast game development roster.

Sonic Adventures wasn't playable and Sega reported that it had just received a more recent build of the title but would not have it available for showing. Sega did say that all levels in Adventures would run at 60 FPS - contrary to rumor that 60 FPS would only be available on the action levels and adventure levels would run only at 30 FPS.

Third party titles Climax Landers and Blue Stinger were being shown to editors at Gamers Day but were not available for play. Blue Stinger contained background fog but Sega claims that the fogging effect is for setting the mood of the game and not there in “cover up” mode (like some of the fogging effects are used on some Nintendo 64 titles).

Sega also talked a little about its first sci-fi, massively multiplayer, adventure title being developed by Boston-based Turbine Entertainment. Players will be stuck on an alien world where they will be able to explore terrain and meet up with other players.

Focusing on the Dreamcast hardware itself: an interesting fact is the system has an option for VGA out. Since the graphics processor, the PowerVR SG chip was in-part conceived for the PC, this isn't too great a shock but the idea that you can plug the Dreamcast into your computer monitor will only improve the look of games. With the current console products on the market that allow you to use a monitor with your console, this has obviously has been something gamers have been asking for. The VGA out might also be used for the newly launched and wickedly expensive HDTVs since they support higher resolutions than current TVs.

Also included in the Dreamcast hardware is a serial port. PC gamers know the serial port as the place to plug in high-end controllers, pedals, digital cameras…you get the idea. Sega will only say that the serial port will be used for upcoming peripherals. One could easily speculate that gamers would get a keyboard out of the deal and having the serial port could allow for an infrared transceiver/receiver unit to be attached for a new series of cordless controllers and other devices.

The modem on the Dreamcast is also removable so gamers could be able to add a faster modem than the standard 33.6 modem that comes with the system. Sega claims that 33.6 won't make the gaming experience all that much different from using a 56.6 modem (interestingly, Sega could change its mind later on and offer a 56k upgrade just in case).

VMS=VMU in USConcerning the VMS (Virtual Memory System), the name has now changed its name in the US to the VMU – we're guessing that the name stands for Virtual Memory Unit. The reason for the change was that the VMS name VMS is already trademarked. Other functions of the VMU were revealed as a way to transport maps and inventory in RPG titles.

Sega has re-examined itself for the launch of Dreamcast and has placed its AM teams on Dreamcast development first and foremost and said that there "won't be as much of reliance on arcade titles." And while the staff at Sega is still rather slim from earlier staff cuts, president Bernie Stolar is out meeting with retailers, and evangelizing to retailers.

That's all for now, we expect to hear more details regarding the Dreamcast from Joe Fielder and GameSpot News' editor Chris Johnston so come back for more details tomorrow.
