Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty launched around Australia on July 27 to hordes of adoring fans, but there was one feature missing from the game that struck a raw note with local players: North American (NA) server access. Originally, Blizzard planned to lock Australian and New Zealand (A&NZ) gamers out of the NA servers for online play, forcing them to play on the highly competitive Southeast Asian servers. Shortly after, Blizzard retracted the decision and said that the NA servers would be opened up to A&NZ gamers, but at the cost of downloading the NA Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty client.
Again trying to appease the upset fans, Blizzard has announced via its community blog that it is now planning to release a patch that will add in an in-game server region selector to A&NZ versions of the game. Acknowledging the worries that A&NZ gamers had about downloading massive client files on limited download caps, Blizzard said, "Some of you have expressed concerns regarding your ISP download caps. We wanted to let you know that it will not be necessary to download a new Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty client to play in the NA region."
Blizzard did include one little disclaimer in the post, saying that "if an in-game solution can’t be implemented right away, then alternatives will be provided, such as offering a small file download that would duplicate the intended functionality and allow your existing client to access the NA region."
Despite caving in to the fan outcry, the megapublisher is still sticking to its guns and recommending that Aussie players connect to the Southeast Asian servers for lower latency. At this time it's uncertain as to when the fix will be released, but Blizzard has previously stated that a solution will be in place within 60 days of Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty's release.
