TOKYO--On the bonus DVD that accompanied today's release of Dragon Quest VIII, publisher Square Enix unveiled what appears to be a new game. Apparently titled Code Age, Square Enix is calling the title a "new concept brand."
Few details are known about the title except that it's under the direction of Yusuke Naora. Naora has worked on a number of Square Enix titles, including Chrono Trigger, The Bouncer, and Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and X.
Naora gained some notoriety as the character designer for Unlimited Saga, and he recently worked as the art director for Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.
A peek at Code Age's trailer reveals the title appears to use cel-shading, similar to what was featured in Unlimited Saga (and the soon-to-be-released Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song).
The trailer begins with a scene set at sea, switches to an aerial view, then shows several character shots. The narration in the trailer translates as follows:
Deep, deep into the sea where light cannot reach,
The environment is severe beyond imagination.
One fish evolved its eyes to seek for light.
Another fish evolved its mouth to seek food and to survive.
Mankind escaped from evolution by crawling out of the water and reshaping its environment.
Everyone was dreaming of a bright future,
But that was abandoned by a new world order.
This is a story about people that were once human.
This is a story about people that continued to be human.
Code Age.
[Our] heart was screaming,
Evolve if you want to survive.
[Our] instincts were screaming,
Leave the strongest gene.
Show off your style.
