While Spider-Man is currently part of Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe, the cinematic rights to the character remain with Sony. This also includes the many heroes and villains who have appeared in Spider-Man comics over the years, and there are various spin-off movies on the way, including the upcoming Venom. However, it has been reported that one of the films--Silver and Black--is no longer happening.
The movie was set to focus on the characters of Silver Sable and the Black Cat and was first announced back in March 2017. However, Variety now reports that it has been scrapped and the characters will now be spun out to their own standalone movies. This was confirmed by Columbia Pictures boss Sanford Panitch, who said: "We believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film."

Now Playing: Venom - Movie Trailer 2
Director Gina Prince-Bythewood had been attached to helm Silver and Black, but Variety states she is unlikely to be involved with either of the separate movies. She last commented on the project back in February when she tweeted that she was still working on the script; however, the movie was subsequently removed from release schedules. Nevertheless, the site reports that Sony is keen to work with Prince-Bythewood on "other projects" and that the studio will hire other female directors for the Silver Sable and Black Cat movies.
Venom hits theaters on October 5. It stars Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, and Woody Harrelson. The new trailer was released last week, and it gave us the first look at what appears to be Riot, another symbiote.
Other Spider-Man spin-offs in the works include movies based on Morbius the Living Vampire, Kraven the Hunter, and Silk. In June it was reported that Jared Leto has signed on to play Morbius, while the Kraven movie currently has The Equalizer 2 writer Richard Wenk attached to it. Silk is a Korean-American superhero, and that film is in "early development."
