Mpath Foundation is about to roll out "a newly developed set of technologies... that allow hundreds of thousands of to challenge each other and play... game properties over the World Wide Web."
And surprisingly, perhaps, it isn't the Mplayer game service that will be the first to use that set of technologies.
Sony's The Station will be the first to integrate Mpath's new online community-building and game technologies into its site, thanks to an agreement announced Tuesday between the two companies. The first applications to utilize Mpath's new technology will be multiplayer versions of popular Sony games, and gameplay will launch later this year.
Don't take this news as evidence that Mplayer is disappearing, however. Since Mpath Foundation goes a long way to supporting the online gaming division of Mpath (that being Mplayer), this news can also be seen as good news for Mpath's gaming service as well.
